Après des débuts en 1979 à Amsterdam en pleine vague punk, The Ex devient au fil des années un melting pot de styles musicaux qu’à priori tout peut opposer . Noise, Jazz, improvisation et musique ethnique sont regroupés sous une seule appellation : la « Ex-music » . Des guitares discordantes et rythmiques à l’extrème, une batterie parfois presque africaine, la façon dont G.W. Sok récite ses textes et donne à la musique de The Ex son caractère particulier.

En plus de 27 ans The Ex ne s’est jamais laissé étiqueter dans aucune catégorie. Le groupe est en constant développement, ouvert à de nouvelles idées et collaborations avec de gens dont l’esprit est proche : le violoncelliste new-yorkais Tom Cora, le chorégraphe Wim Kannekens, Thurston Moore de Sonic Youth, le musicien de jazz Ab Baars, Steve Albini et son groupe Shellac, etc. The Ex ont même été jouer en Ethiopie début 2001 pour quelques concerts mais surtout afin de rencontrer artistiquement les musiciens fous qui apparaissent notament sur l’énorme série "Ethiopiques"... The Ex viennent d’inviter en Hollande pour leur toute récente tournée le groupe Zaïrois Konono. Au grè des années différents musiciens sont devenus membres à part entière du groupe, d’autres en sont partis en laissant la place au prochain qui pourrait apporter de nouvelles idées, une nouvelle dynamique...

La ligne directrice est restée la même - faire de la musique avec le cœur et l’ame - loin des courants et des attentes commerciaux. L’approche politique importante - soutien aux mineurs anglais, aux palestiniens pendant la première Intifada, par exemple - et la manière dont les Ex organisent leurs concerts, leurs disques, leur distribution sont un exemple significatif pour le circuit de la musique « alternative ». Leur obstination à se renouveller sans cesse, leur engagement social et la façon dont The Ex se place dans l’industrie musicale est récompensée de façon inattendue notamment par la remise d’un Award au BV Popprijs 1991 :une récompense pour un groupe influent de la scène néerlandaise.

2006 Early in the year The Ex does a series of concerts in Holland, their first regular concerts over there in more than a year, and in February they go for a ten-day tour to France, in the company of kora-player Djibril Diabate.

In April they go into the studio to record a cd with Ethiopian sax-player Getatchew Mekuria (born in 1935 !). During that same period The Ex and Mekuria present, accompanied by Xavier Charles (clarinet), Joost Buis (trombone) and Brody West (alto-saxophone), and with Colin on bass, an Ethiopian night during concerts Groningen, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Diksmuide (Belgium), Paris and Tourcoing (France). The songs are Getatchew’s, with new arrangements by The Ex & Guests. The Ex play Spain in May, followed by some Dutch shows with Zea. Around the Summer they play festivals in Zagreb (Croatia), Roskilde (Denmark), and Lärz (Germany), Nickelsdorf (Austria) and Parthenay (France).

In September they’re flown over to Chicago to play at the 25th anniversary festival of their US record-label Touch And Go. It is the 13th time they visit the USA.

In the autumn they play again in Spain and then tour France, Italy and Austria, together with the Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed trio from Ethiopia. The album Moa Anbessa, by Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex & Guests, is released in December on their sub-label Terp Records. At the same time The Ex is back in the USA for a ten-day Eastcoast tour together with DJ Rupture.

2007 In January The Ex do two shows with Getatchew Mekuria in his home-town Addis Abeba, to celebrate the release of their album. And since cd’s are still rare in Ethiopia, they decide to release 10,000 copies on cassette. Just before returning to Europe, they hand out promo-copies to the local taxi-drivers, the best guarantee for good publicity.

In February they’ll fly for a one-off to Dublin, followed by an appearance together with Chicago’s Tortoise in Paris, after which they will tour Scandinavia together with Huntsville from Norway. In April they team up again wtih theatre-group d’Electrique, for a reprise of A Clockwork Orange. This time they’ll tour all over Holland, in the months of May and June. End of June they’ll visit Canada.
